We invite applications for an exciting opportunity in the Centre for Photonics at the University of Bath. The role is a Postdoctoral 69É«Ç鯬 Associate position available for up to 12 months to develop advanced optical fibre technologies for ultraviolet (UV-C) quantum key distribution (QKD) in satellite communication networks. This well-resourced and collaborative project is led by the University of Bristol, with partners at the Universities of Strathclyde and York and Fraunhofer UK, and aims to extend the security benefits of quantum communication to a truly global scale.

Working closely with our collaborators, you will contribute to the development of a hollow-core optical fibre designed to operate in the UV-C spectral region (100–280 nm). The fibre will act as a mode-filtering solution that ensures secure quantum key distribution without disturbing the polarisation encoding—addressing one of the most challenging aspects of satellite-based quantum communication systems.

You will design, fabricate, and characterise hollow-core fibres that are single-moded at UV-C wavelengths and exhibit temperature- and stress-independent polarisation behaviour. Your work will draw on the University of Bath’s research-grade optical fibre fabrication cleanroom and state-of-the-art photonics laboratories. The project offers an opportunity to expand your expertise in fibre fabrication, UV photonics, and quantum technologies, and to contribute to the development of a pathfinder platform for future global quantum networks.

About you

You will hold (or be close to completing) a doctorate in experimental photonics, quantum optics, or a related discipline.

Posess strong experimental skills and a solid understanding of optical waveguides and light–matter interactions are required.

Experience with optical fibre fabrication, hollow-core fibre, or ultraviolet photonics will be advantageous but is not essential.

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to 69É«Ç鯬 Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. About you

You will have engineering experience in hardware and/or medical device development, and ideally the design and evaluation of interactive systems with end-users. We are seeking a full-time time highly motivated post-doctoral research associate to join Prof Edan Foley’s group in the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Bath.

Prof Edan Foley’s group is currently focusing on the effects of commensal and pathogenic bacteria on intestinal homeostasis in the zebrafish model. The group is particularly interested in understanding how BEST4 cells shape host responses to pro-inflammatory challenges. BEST4 cells are a recently identified intestinal epithelial cell type with putative roles in the regulation of intestinal pH and mucus hydration. However, we have minimal understanding of the relationships between BEST4 cells and inflammatory challenges in a live animal model.

This job purpose can be summarised as follows:

  • Working with larval and adult zebrafish characterize the impacts of pro-inflammatory challenges on BEST4 cell function in the gut.
  • Determine the consequences of BEST4 cell ablation for host responses to intestinal inflammation.
  • Using genetic and genomic methodologies, characterize the transcriptional states of BEST4 cells as the intestine experiences and recovers from an inflammatory challenge.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • A PhD or equivalent in a relevant subject
  • Experience working with animal models of intestinal development and homeostasis.
  • Experience working with intestinal responses to injurious challenges, particularly in the context of genetic manipulation of the host.
  • Bioinformatic expertise in the characterization of intestinal cell types that express fluorescent markers of interest.
  • Publications in a relevant field.

About the role

The MHRG is funded for an initial 5 years by the NIHR (National Institute for Health 69É«Ç鯬). 

The focus of our work is applied research aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of children and young people in the local region.

This post will support the substance use and addiction work package of the MHRG, led by Prof Tom Freeman. 

Key areas of focus include identifying substance use needs within the local region through quantitative surveys, identifying the extent to which current services meet these needs, and mapping the gap between need and provision to inform further service development. 

Through this mapping work, as well as partnership with key stakeholders and people with lived and living experience, this post will pilot new interventions to address emerging areas of substance need, as well as supporting funding applications to support larger scale evaluations.

We are looking to recruit a candidate with demonstrated excellence in quantitative methods, and experience in addiction and/or mental health research.   

We have a clear commitment to skills training and career development for all research staff in the MHRG. You will work under the supervision of world-leading clinicians and academics. 

The Bath MHRG is partnering with the Universities of Bristol and Exeter (as part of the GW4 network) to deliver this project and there will be opportunities to work with researchers at partner institutions. 

You will have opportunities to receive further research training (e.g., in PPIE and/or good clinical practice).

This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) post, which is available for an initial period of 3 years.

As a post-doctoral 69É«Ç鯬 Associate in this project, you will study 2D materials and develop new defects for quantum sensing. This position is linked to a new research collaboration between University of Bath and INRS in Canada. You will use advanced optical and photoemission spectroscopic techniques to discover and characterize new defects with unique light emission properties. These will be used to build the next generation of quantum sensors capable of measuring and mapping magnetic fields and magnetic fluctuations in quantum materials. You will participate and be part of an international collaboration between the UK and Canada aiming at boosting next generation quantum technologies.

About you

You will have experience in condensed matter physics in particular the study of materials by optical and photoemission spectroscopic tools. With a good experience in data analysis, you will also have:

  • A PhD degree in a STEM discipline relevant to the project (ideally physics).
  • A very good knowledge of the state-of-the-art in spectroscopic methods such as Raman, Photoluminescence, ARPES, XPS.
  • Programming skills, ideally in Python, IGOR, Matlab or similar.
  • Experience in handling cryogenics and performing experiments at low temperatures.
  • A strong interest in condensed matter physics, in particualr 2D materials, 2D materials with defects and their fundamental excitations: plasmons, phonons, excitons, spin- and charge-density waves.
  • The ability to conduct individual research in an international, interdisciplinary setting.
  • Proven potential to publish in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals, demonstrated by a relevant publication track-record.
  • Demonstrated experience in presenting results orally and writing technical reports.

The Lovell Lab, in partnership with AdvanCell, is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral 69É«Ç鯬 Associate on a 24-month contract, with the possibility of a further 12-month extension. The position is available to start as soon as possible and will involve travel to Brisbane, Australia, to work with colleagues at AdvanCell.

Project Background: Targeted radionuclide therapy (TRT) is an emerging and highly promising strategy for treating a range of cancers. By using targeting vectors conjugated to radionuclides, TRT delivers cytotoxic radiation directly to tumour cells while minimising damage to surrounding healthy tissues.

This project aims to identify selective peptide binders for proteins, cells, or tissues using state-of-the-art peptide display technologies. These binders will serve as initial targeting vectors in hit-to-lead optimisation programmes to develop novel radiomedicines. The work will integrate:

  • Phage or mRNA display
  • Automated solid-phase peptide synthesis

The selected candidate will join a research project sponsored by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to advance state-of-the-art physiologically based biopharmaceutics (PBBM)/pharmacokinetics (PBPK) modeling approaches that can inform regulatory decisions on innovator and generic products for locally-acting drugs in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, as a viable alternative to in vivo studies for the establishment of bioequivalence (BE) for these products.

The goal is to generate and evaluate formulation variants, characterize their critical quality attributes (CQAs) and generate physiological relevant in vitro data from different systems for selected commercial formulations. The team in Bath (Department of Life Sciences and Department of Chemical Engineering) will work closely with the scientific team at Simulations Plus to determine the impact of changes to CQAs and physiological variables on local and systemic exposure in patient groups.

In this role, a typical day may include: formulation development, formulation characterisation, generating in vitro biopharmaceutics data (solubility, dissolution, etc.), and translation of in vitro results.

About you

The ideal candidate will hod a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering or an allied field. They will have at least one years' experience in formulation development and characterisation and HPLC analysis and experience in generating in vitro biopharmaceutics data.

As a post-doctoral 69É«Ç鯬 Associate, you will develop new tools to study the soundscapes of the Arctic Ocean. You will use advanced techniques like Deep Learning and AI to analyse long-term measurements from our European project HiAOOS (“High-Arctic Ocean Observing Systems”) and other unique, associated datasets. You will compare the sounds from ice, biodiversity and human impacts with other observations (from multi-purpose moorings to satellite data) to gain new insights into the effects of climate change on the polar environments. You will share this knowledge by providing annotated datasets to train and validate future AI tools, and by developing innovative training materials for polar scientists, for example using JupyterLab and Docker packaging, to create MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses).

About you

You will have experience in underwater passive acoustics and signal processing. With a good knowledge of ocean environments, you will also have:

  • A PhD degree in a STEM discipline relevant to the project.
  • A very good knowledge of the state-of-the-art in soundscape research and the latest themes in Deep Learning/AI, ideally adapted to underwater sounds;
  • Programming skills, ideally in Matlab, Python or similar.
  • A strong interest in the marine Arctic environment, including ice processes, animal vocalisations and the potential impacts of human activities.
  • The ability to conduct individual research in an international, interdisciplinary setting.
  • Proven potential to publish in high-quality, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Demonstrated experience in presenting results orally and writing technical reports

The proposed project is entitled "Large-scale universal behaviour of the Ising model". Candidates will also be encouraged to work on other projects alongside this. 

The successful candidate will join Prob-L@B, a leading research group consisting of 12 permanent academic staff, 3 postdocs and around 12 PhD students. There are weekly seminars during term-time and regular reading groups and graduate courses. 

About you

Candidates should have a PhD in probability or a related discipline. They should be interested in research topics aligned with the work of Christoforos Panagiotis, such as percolation, the Ising model and other spin systems, self-avoiding walks, or statistical physics more broadly. Successful candidates will be encouraged both to continue existing research directions and to initiate new projects, including collaborations with Christoforos Panagiotis and other members of Prob-L@B. They should have the potential to publish in high-quality journals.

A lower grade offer may be made (Grade 6) with comparable reduction in responsibilities and amendment in job title to 69É«Ç鯬 Assistant, if a suitable applicant cannot be found to fill the Grade 7 position. Applicants will need to be within six months of their course completion date and will be promoted to 69É«Ç鯬 Associate once their PhD has been awarded.

We are seeking academics in cybersecurity to carry out research, teach and help with the running of the department. We’re particularly interested in people with research interests around fundamental aspects of cybersecurity, including but not limited to post-quantum cryptography, formal methods and verification, complexity, logical systems and type theory.

You’ll be part of the Mathematical Foundations of Computation research group, within the Department of Computer Science. The group’s work has been honoured with prizes (IEEE LICS Kleene award; IEEE LICS Test of Time Award; Sacks Prize) and we have strong international connections. Your research might also engage with the other groups in the Department: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Human-Computer Interaction and Visual Computing.

What you will do

This is a research-intensive role, with the expectation of significant contributions to research excellence and innovation as well as also contributing to teaching within your associated Department.
