This a full-time appointment for a fixed term of three years commencing 1st August 2025. 

This represents an outstanding opportunity for an established researcher, with an internationally competitive research programme, to develop new synergies facilitated by the integration of the Pharmacy & Pharmacology and Biology & Biochemistry communities into a single unitary life sciences department. The department's current research strengths include, but are not limited to, peptide-based drug discovery, development of novel antimicrobials, discovery for interaction with DNA targets, CNS active compounds, zebrafish and organoid-based drug-discovery models. 

You will have an active research programme and a proven track record of innovation and high impact publication in any aspect of medicinal chemistry, chemical biology and drug discovery, including, but not restricted to: 

  • New chemical modalities 
  • Biologics 
  • Novel biological targets 
  • Chemical probes 
  • Computational chemistry 
  • Natural products 

As well as conducting innovative, externally funded research, you will be contributing to the delivery and development of taught courses at undergraduate and master’s level and to supervise postgraduate research students. You should be able to take on additional support roles, including acting as an Academic Advisor

About the Department

The Department of Life Sciences at the University of Bath was established in 2022 through the merger of the former Departments of Biology & Biochemistry and Pharmacology & Pharmacy. The department is located on the main University campus, in close proximity to the Departments of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics. There is a strong interdisciplinary and collaborative culture across departments, fostered by a number of research centres including those for Drug Discovery, Mathematical Biology and Bioengineering and Biomedical Technologies as well as the Milner Centre for Evolution. 

69色情片ers within the department have access to the university’s central imaging and chemical characterisation facilities as well as the GW4 Cryo-EM facility located at nearby University of Bristol (). The department boasts a suite of environmentally controlled culture rooms as well as greenhouses, a zebrafish aquarium, Drosophila laboratory, a GridION and PromethION 2 Solo nanopore sequencing facility and a range of dedicated microscopes including confocal, 2-photon, light-sheet and TIRF.

We are seeking a proactive, self-motivated and collegiate Lecturer in Pharmacology to assist in the delivery of our undergraduate pharmacology, pharmacy and bioscience programmes. Our Department and University has achieved an excellent reputation for teaching, and we are seeking a high quality candidate to further enhance the academic and employability skills of our students. 

This will involve teaching small groups, lecturing, delivery of practical classes and supporting students on undergraduate/postgraduate courses as well as administrative, assessment and exam duties as required. This post will support learning and teaching in the subject area of pharmacology. 

This is a full-time, fixed term contract for 12 months.

The job purpose can be summarised as follows: 

  • To plan and deliver taught programmes of education and support student learning at undergraduate and postgraduate level (as appropriate). This will include preparation of teaching material, lectures, tutorials, laboratory classes assessment and marking of coursework. 
  • To play a role in developing the teaching culture and student experience of the University. 
  • To provide teaching-related management and administrative duties. 

Whilst it is expected that teaching will be informed by research/professional expertise, there is no research component to this role.

About the department 

The Department of Life Sciences at the University of Bath was recently formed through the merger of the departments of Biology & Biochemistry and Pharmacy & Pharmacology. It has over 90 academic staff across a broad range of disciplines including, biochemistry, cell & developmental biology, evolution, genetics, immunology microbiology, pharmacology, pharmaceutical pharmacy and structural biology. The vast majority of research within the merged departments was rated as 4* or 3* in the last (REF2021) assessment.

The highly successful Bath MPharm is now being delivered on site in new purpose-built facilities at the University of Plymouth campus, with the first cohort of students in September 2024. This venture is strongly supported by the wider pharmacy community and represents a major step forward in supporting the pharmacy workforce in the southwest of England. In September 2025, we will welcome a new cohort of Year 1 students, as well as a first cohort of Preparatory year (foundation year) students.

We are recruiting staff who will be located primarily in Plymouth but employed by the University of Bath, supporting delivery of this new MPharm degree.

About the role:

We are recruiting one Lecturer or Senior Lecturer post (teaching-focussed) to be part of the Plymouth-based MPharm teaching team. You will provide high quality teaching and assessment on this new MPharm degree course, support individual learners and contribute to the successful delivery of this new school of pharmacy. You will be an excellent teacher and have a collegiate approach to working with academic and professional services colleagues. You will be joining a small but dynamic team based in Plymouth and will be expected to collaborate with colleagues at the University of Bath. 

The University are willing to show flexibility in working practices and so applications from suitably qualified candidates seeking a role which offers hybrid working, full or part time working, job sharing and other forms of flexible employment are welcome. Please note, while the roles will be mainly based out of Plymouth, occasional travel to the Bath will be required.
