About the role

Working closely with the Climate Action team, this is an essential role using data analysis and face-to-face influence to support the university to meet energy and cost reduction objectives, and targets within the context of wider sustainability commitments such as carbon and water management and corporate social responsibility.

You will:

  • carry out investigations and audits of building fabric, building service plant and usage to understand energy and water consumption and identify performance improvements
  • use the university’s systems such as Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and Building Management System (BMS) to identify and report on energy use, management and reduction
  • input into the design and commissioning of new buildings and any other major/minor refurbishments to ensure the most sustainable outcome is achieved
  • promote an energy-saving culture within the department and the university as a whole, by developing relationships throughout the university community
  • engage and liaise with staff, students, departments and other groups to provide good practice advice and support the adoption and implementation of innovative energy saving ideas on campus
  • take part in energy efficiency projects, projects identified in the Carbon Management Plan and project emanating from the Climate Action Framework

About you

The ideal candidate will have:

  • a degree, ideally in Engineering, Energy, Building Services or Environmental Management or a related subject or equivalent practical experience and alternative qualifications
  • practical experience and technical knowledge in Energy, Building Services or Environmental Management or related field
  • experience delivering energy audits that evaluate the performance of building fabric, building service plant and controls
  • excellent analytical, communication and influencing skills

An understanding of energy & carbon legislation, project management and general financial management would be an advantage but is not essential.

The Campus Infrastructure Department are responsible for the strategic planning, development and management of the University’s lands and buildings, you will join the Electrical Services team.

Your new job will involve:

  • Undertake small to medium size installations/alterations works as part of building refurbishment or change of use projects.
  • Planned and reactive maintenance activities in the University's academic buildings, residences, and sports facilities. 
  • Repair tasks across the range of electrical building services, plant and equipment 
  • Some simple mechanical work 

You must have:

  • completed a recognised electrical apprenticeship, be qualified to minimum City & Guilds NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification 
  • a BS 7671 18th edition certificate
  • relevant technical experience in larger buildings or commercial facilities
  • good problem solving, customer service and communication skills 

Ideally, you will also have:

  • Knowledge and experience in the maintenance of modern fire alarm systems, emergency lighting, LV distribution, intruder alarms, access control systems, telephone and data wiring
  • City & Guilds 2391 Inspection and Testing qualification
  • Demonstrable mechanical skills or be willing to train for them

Further information

This is a full-time role, working 36.5 hours (Monday-Friday) from 8.15am to 4.45pm, however, to suit operational requirements you may be requested to work flexibly at any time between 7am and 7pm. You will also be required to take part in an on-call rota, which attracts an additional allowance and overtime opportunities are also available.
